Almost no one escapes from the hacker, who goes on the hunt for passwords. To avoid trouble will be possible only to those who keeps their passwords on a flash drive in encrypted form.

How to do it

1. Install a Safety Box for passwords

Download a free utility KeePass. Insert the USB-flash drive into the appropriate port on your PC, create a new folder on it and copy the contents of the archives «KeePass-x.xx.zip». Run KeePass.exe. Then go to «View | Change Language», select «Language» and restart KeePass by pressing the «Yes».

2. Create a new password database

Select “File | New” and enter USB-drive as the password storage. The next screen will prompt you to set a master password. It must be entered every time you start KeePass. We recommend the use of at least 15 letters, numbers and special characters, such as the initial letters of words and punctuation marks one of the phrases that are easy for you to remember. Confirm your main password by clicking on “OK”.

3. Activate Protected Mode

To trojan could not be considered your password for KeePass, should be used to enter it protected mode, similar to UAC in Windows 7. To do this, in KeePass, go to “Tools | Options | Security”, and check the box – “Enter master key on secure desktop.”

4. Fill the database of passwords

KeePass can sort passwords into groups. By default, your new password bank has groups such as “General”, “Windows” or “Internet”. To create a new account, select the appropriate group (or create a new one), right-click in the white area to the right and then – “Add Entry” from the drop down menu. Fill all fields and click “OK”. Because you no longer need to remember passwords for each account or a network service, you can select a new, more complex passwords, which can be generated automatically. 5. Automatic login

If you want to log in to your account in any network when using KeePass, you do not need to enter the password manually. Open the group in which the password is stored on the corresponding account. Right-click on an entry in KeePass password store and drop-down list, click “Perform-Auto-Type.” After that, the program will give your data to the browser, and the browser will open a new window, in which you automatically logged to your account. Notethat in the field “URL” necessary to enter the address,  that you normally enter in the browser for authentication. Otherwise the automatic insertion of password, through the KeePass, will not work.

6. Advanced features of KeePass

If you want to extend the functionality of KeePass, go to “Tools | Plugins | Get more plugins”, and you will be redirected to the site with useful extensions for the program (our recommendations you will find in the table below).  Now click on the name of the plugin, download it and unzip the archive into a folder with the program on a flash drive. Restart KeePass and go to “Tools | Plugins.” The list of available plug-ins will be displayed at the bottom.

Best extensions for KeePass

  • DataBaseBackup – creates a backup copy of the bank passwords in case USB-
    drive will be stolen or lost.
  • Twofish Cipher – adds encryption algorithm, which is almost impossible to
    hack. Note that because of this, KeePass will run slower.
  • KeeAgent – blocks illegal access during transmission your data via SSH-connection.
  • KeyExchanger – saves master password on your mobile phone: you can open your safety vault for passwords via Bluetooth
  • KeeForm – opens your favorite sites by pressing the button and automatically
    introduces your registration data.

KeePassKeePass is a free utility designed for creating and maintaining a database of encrypted passwords. She will remember the combinations of user names and passwords from any services. The program supports the grouping of passwords by sections and the automatic insertion of a pair of username and password in different forms. As KeePass does not require installation, it can be carried on an USB stick. There’s also recommended to store your passwords database that are encrypted with AES 256-bit key or Twofish.
